A Big Day Out for the Whites B's beckoned, after 2 wins in a row including THAT barn storming finish against Rostrevor the week before where the Glamour managed to come from behind...TWICE. The boys were up for a big game against a team that hadn't won a match this season and were playing football about as well as Susan Boyle would go advertising beauty products. The game kicked off in fine fashion with Shakira (a.k.a Pancho) in the centre of midfield shaking those famous hips and managing to simultaneously make the opposition look like a bunch of swooning fans trying to grab hold of her whilst still delivering that punchy passing game that we know and love. In no time at all the glamour had scored their first couple through the evergreen Tom Jones (a.k.a Richard Harris) who it must be said is looking great for 80 odd and still managing to combine the skills of Messi with the brutish tackling of Roy Keane, his second especially was a masterclass in how to deliver a crunching tackle in midfield then receive the ball back spin through 2 defenders, jink round a third and slot it bottom corner all the while singing Delilah without a waver of the voice to be heard. The domination of the midfield led Peter Garrett (a.k.a Rob Alberton) to head up field in that somewhat amusing epileptic fit like way that we all love to see and bag a couple for himself, checking the record books he's managed to increase his all time goal tally for the whites by 30% in one 5 minute period, and he still sung the classics, Beds are Burning was this author's favourite on the day. Shakira managed to grab one before half time and it was a confident end to the first set 5-0 at half time.
Band manager Rob, had a few words at half time for the boys (and shakira), keep playing the way we are, concentrate and show them some respect....even if they did have an actual girl playing for them who rumour has it was one of the player's girlfriends and had arrived to watch the game and somehow ended up in the mosh pit. I don't know whose girlfriend she was but she was best on ground for them so they should get her every week, plus Patricio Buane (a.k.a Harry M) said he didn't want to feel a senora rub against him in that way without being able to make sweet music with her afterwards. But I digress.
Second set began a little more sloppily, it looked like the boys had had a few too many waiting to come on and sounded a bit out of practice, passes weren't hitting the man and in general we seemed a little lethargic. The wake up call came when Asian singing sensation William Hung (a.k.a Ben Lee) sung his only bad note of the day in under hitting the pass back to Chris Martin of coldplay (a.k.a Vish), and one of the opposition managed to react fastest and drill the ball into the back of the net. There after a couple of quick substitutions one for an injury to Britney Seacrest (a.k.a Ryan Spears) and the others for fresh legs, we were all humming from the same tune book again. The famous DJ Tiesto (a.k.a Louie) managed to come on and with that high energy style that is his trademark he weaved his light and laser spectacle to dazzle their eyes before grabbing a goal for himself after a long layoff with injury. The last appearance for the night was reserved for the all singing, all dancing and some might even say all knowing ginger that we all love, that's right everybody please welcome to the stage............................ WILLIE NELSON (as if you need it a.k.a Wes Reid)!!!!!! The crowd went wild and with that trademark lethargic genius old Willie managed to get on the end of a great ball and finish the day with a bang, we won't mention the litany of step overs, flicks and tricks that didn't or only partially worked just that the Ninja is back and still singing the hits that we all love. 7-1 to the glamour, three wins in a row for the B's and one hell of a Big Day Out.
Special mention to Punjabi MC (a.k.a Anoop) whose deft running and trickery on the wing left the boys screaming for more of those funky bangra hits - no goals to reward the legions of screaming fans on the sidelines though!
