Match Report

The Bs were up for a big game this week, to continue their winning momentum after a sluggish start to the year.

While somewhat depleted on the subs bench, due to a couple of last minute no-shows, causing Robin all sorts of selection headaches, they were buoyed by the return to the bench of "intense" Richard Harris (thanks for the nickname George) after his exploits with superstars and celebrities (well, ex-Adelaide boy Anthony La Paglia at least) in the grudge match at the Cannes Film Festival.

The early exchanges of the game were tense with Whites attacking well but Immanuel causing no shortage of problems for the defence, especially in the air and from set pieces. Slowly though the class of Wez and George in the midfield began to take over the temper of the game.

A couple of new faces have joined the Bs in recent weeks, and both showed their value early on, with Anoop causing havoc on the left wing and big John giving his own masterclass in close control upfront. It was hardly surprising that the two combined for the first goal, although it was actually missed by this correspondent. I caught the second though, as Anoop again flew down the wing and crossed for Wez to show his ginger power and volley a goal from 2 metres out. A couple of minutes later and John pounced on a defensive error and finished clinically for a 3-0 lead. Not something the Bs have been accustomed to this season.

Perhaps it was the high altitude sickness caused by such heady heights early on, but whatever it was, the defence, who had been so assured after the early aerial jitters, relaxed a little allowing Immanuel back in the game with a goal which came from some scrappy goal box action. The lead suddenly didn't look so convincing.

3-1 half-time, and as one slightly jaded sideline commentator noted, "hmm... one more goal would make it an interesting 3-2".

Well ye of little faith. The Bs came out to show them that they meant business. Within 10 minutes the Whites had basically ended the game as a contest. John scored his hat-trick with a well finished one-on-one with the keeper, while a freak cross-goal from Jose silenced the away fans, and brought bemused joy to the Whites faithful on the sidelines.

Half an hour to go and there was no respite for Immanuel as Richard and Manny came on in midfield, and Cam came on in defence allowing Harry to move into the Makelele role. This midfield triangle then began terrorising a quickly tiring opposition. Richard released John through the middle for his fourth goal, while his fifth came from turning three players and beating the keeper on the near post. Sure, he had three players to pass to in the middle who were better placed, but hell when you've scored five goals, who's complaining?

Then Anoop scored another freak goal from a corner, with the vicious curl apparently helped by the curvature of his tongue (see Pouf's photo evidence on the forum), and Manny finished things off with a beautiful pass back to the Immanuel keeper which somehow managed to do a leg break off his shoulder and slide in to the net.

Somewhere in the middle of this goal rush there was one consolation for Immanuel, a nicely placed free kick that was pretty much unstoppable for Vish. At least we couldn't blame the wall this week.

9-2 the final result. All in all, a great result, and one to help with the goal difference. The Bs have begun to get that winning habit and its not one that they want to lose.
