"Islamic G-Hat is back,
Getting' on the attack,
Gangsta Rap is dead,
Terror style is fat."
|
These prophetic words would change the world in the winter of 2003, when out of the bowels of the Adelaide ghettos came the new wave of aggressive global music: terrorist rap.
Its proponents and originators were the new kids on the block of the Adelaide scene, the highly talented and dangerous "Islamic G-Hat". Osama Ben Ladies, Al K-Duh and Mixblaster Spike had met on the wrong side of the tracks and decided to stay there. Fed up with gangster rap they declared war on this obsolete mouthpiece of revolution and proposed the "G" thing to be an old "Hat".
Mixing newsreel blasts with speeches by President Bush and taking a shotgun into the studio, they created the sort of explosive mix, which had propelled Nirvana to world stardom. However, it was the lyrics, which ended up separating terror rap from the mainstream pulp of P-Diddy.

"J - Yo,
I ain't talkin' about,
What'choo to da pow,
I got it - ow,
Islamic G-Hat in da houze."

(taken from "Mercedes Ladies" off the "Ba boom! Baboon!" album)
This was dysfunctional poetry at its most raw. The Advertiser called it "incomprehensible", but the fans latched onto it in a flash. As much as the government tried no one could take "Mowin' George W's Bush" off the air. Of course ARIA, pressured by the establishment, denied all knowledge of the band's record sales and so the single went gold without ever hitting the mainstream charts.
From there on Islamic G-Hat went from strength to strength, culminating in them mistakenly receiving a best country album award at Tamworth for "Bush Baby, Push Baby". Terror rap had arrived, but it didn't look like the world was ready for it.
