this one was a game of two cliches - firstly it was all about getting a result to see the club somewhere beyond the second round of the competition after some early departures in recent years, and secondly it was all about winning. I don't know how winning is a cliche' but despite some general scrapiness for some of the game, the whites showed they were deserved winners on the day - just, generally outclassing their younger opposition 2 goals to 1.
The line up was different to the team that had gone down narrowly to Mercedes the previous week, with myself, Tim Dawson and Ryan all being eligible. Ryan scored the first then created a penalty to be among the best players on a day many came on and contributed well. Craig beat his opponent all day, Campbell was too good for his and Juan provided some good opportunities for the forwards who looked likely to score for most of the first half until eventually breaking the deadlock just after half time.
Not far from a pitch where both teams had competed well for different results the previous week, confidence against a C team from Mercedes was reasonable, though the message before we started was to work hard for the team in every position. Those that turned up to watch were rewarded with some quality soccer at times as well the site of Dan Aikin blowing kisses to the opposition for most of the game.
Captain/Coach Juan lined up on the right side of midfield, I played up front with Ryan and the two Tims behind us. Anthony played another ripper from the hole and was well supported by the Gazelle Wez who created some typical opportunities as well as defending possession. Craig who was tough on the left hand side of defence, while also shoring things up at the back was a defiant Campbell Hopgood on the right and the Crabologist was marshalling things from the middle as per. Heath made some awesome saves with the defence beaten to keep our noses in front. I heard someone say he looked like a viking when i came off.
All in all a great result with everyone putting in 100% for the team. Some chances missed to kill the game early but we didn't let that affect our effort. Thanks to everyone who didn't play and deserved to. Juan made a good point about retaining the positive team spirit we all have and it's definitely showing on the field with results.
well played, another tough game next week.
go whites.
