Reports: The B's | The A's

The B's

Not much to report here. The boys winning streak came to a disappointing end in front of a bevy of past players. Another 5 changes this week, with Cam returning to the B's in place of Duffy, Jase and Anthony back available, Ryan up to the A's, and Joel rocking up late...

Scoring opportunities just did not present themselves.

On a lighter note, Juan made use of the apparent inabilitity to count of referees everywhere (cast your mind back to Australia v Croatia in the last World Cup where the Croat Simunic received THREE yellows). Juan, with his last throw of the dice, decided to try replacing his tiring legs with Mani's even though we'd already made our four subs. No complaints from the ref or the opposition.

Bloody couldn't beat them with 16 either though :P

The A's

The A's took on Sacred heart this week at home in front of a bevy of past, present (and hopefully future) players - all here to celebrate Past Players Day.

I say we were at home... Not quite, we were moved to Park 10, but the pitch was in great condition, the sun was shining, the BBQ was cooking and the crowd was cheering - you could almost imagine we were at the Stadium of White.

Returning to the squad this week was Ayden fresh from injury (allowing Cam to slot back into the B's), while Ryan came in for his first A's game of the year as Long was out (bloody exams).

With a huge contingent of past Uni Whites heroes, there was plenty of expectation at the kick off and the boys really took control early on. It took just 5 minutes for us to break through, as Mohammad found space on the right and released Timmy 'Woobie' Dawson, who coolly slotted home.

Scarcely 5 minutes later we were on the score board again, as this time Woobie slid a beautiful pass to Mohammad, who under heavy pressure from the defender put a fine cross in, Bax couldn't quite knock it in, but Ryan ghosted in at the far post to tap the ball in unmarked.

The good times continued to roll, as we won a free kick about 30 meters from the Sacred Heart goal - Mo, again the provider, put a nice ball in, for Jonny to powerfully head into the top left-hand corner. At 3-nil, there was already talk of singing the Club song, but late in the half, a loose pass from Ayden resulted in Jonny bringing down their striker outside the box.

The Big burly Sacred Heart number 7 then showed us how to slam a free kick, with a very nice goal.

3-1 at half time though, we still managed a rendition of the Uni Whites song (while the past and present players had a couple of photos taken!).

No changes at half time, as Robin was pretty happy with his charges. The midfield especially had done a fine job of nullifying most of Sacred Heart's attacks, whilst also providing chances for our forwards.

The 2nd half provided more of the same, with Baxter opening his account soon after the break. From a corner, Baxter got a looping header, just out of reach of the keeper. At 4-1 though, Sacred Heart were given a life-line, as they were awarded a penalty for an Alberton hand ball.

Unfortunately for them, their striker smashed it well over the goals and effectively ended any chance they had.

The 5th goal for the whites came as Sacred Heart's calls for off-side went unheeded and Woobie was again left alone in the box, unselfishly he passed sideways to an open goal giving Bax the easiest of tap ins. This was soon followed by a 6th goal - and Baxter's hat-trick (his 2nd this year). Sacred Heart's linesman again claimed offside, but Baxter calmly ran onto Woobie's through ball, skipped around the keeper, and tapped it home.

There was still time somehow for more chances, in this most open of games, the first fell to Baxter from a cross on the left, but he got under it, whilst Sacred heart won 3 successive corners only for Woobie to somehow save all 3 on the line!

In the dying minutes we could have scored a 7th goal, as substitute Dan Joyce was brought down after regaining the ball from the defender. PENALTY! The crowd roared for Woobie to take it, but Baxter offered the ball to Dan who had won it... Unfortunately the pressure may have gotten to him, as his meek shot was easily saved by the diving keeper.

In the end, a fantastic result from the A's and many a former Uni White left the game satisfied that the club is in good hands.

Well done to the boys and a huge thank you to all the former Uni Whites legends (and friends and family) who attended!
